Digital Data Fiduciary
After reading the article called Codifying the Right of Trustworthy Delegation: A Crucial empowerment Tool for the Web, I was educated on the need for a digital data fiduciary or trusted third party that can help end users manage their online data and presence while acting under strong duties of care and loyalty similar to that of a financial fiduciary. These data custodial services will act in a users best interest and can be tasked with managing account settings, content, and online interactions. The ACCESS act of 2019 began to pave the way for such custodial services by making it easier for social media users to migrate data from different platforms through network interoperability and data portability. This helps create competition within the social media and online data realm.
Personally, I think this service would be advantageous. I grew up as the MySpace generation often communicating with my friends in High School through AOL instant messenger. I have many pictures from my late teens and early twenties that still reside on MySpace that I would love to have back or would love to migrate to my Facebook or Instagram accounts. Those pictures are from traveling Europe while I was stationed in Germany for the Army. The computer they were stored on is long gone and that is the only place I could get those from. Enlisting a trusted third party to recover the images or my online profile would be fantastic.
