Surfing The Tsunami: An Introduction To Artificial Intelligence Week 5

In chapter 5 of Surfing The Tsunami, Dr. Kelsey challenges us to adopt or at least consider artificial intelligence (AI).  He uses the example of the Amazon Kindle and adoption of ebooks.  Publishers could've stood by sticking to traditional print media and missed out on billions of dollars from revenue in ebooks purchased on the Kindle line of readers.  Additionally, the Kindle prompted other companies to begin developing their own electronic readers similar to the Kindle.  Those publishers that stuck to traditional business models may no longer be around.  They missed out on the concept that innovation is tied to AI.

Dr. Kelsey suggests that our own workload can be a great place to start exploring AI and automation.  Those monotonous tasks that we have to perform day by day could be automated through the use of macros, scripts, or even robotic process automation platforms.  To bring AI, automation, and innovation to organizations one must first advocate for change.  Leaders in organizations must convince senior leadership to look into AI and at least see how it could potentially benefit the organization.  Leaders may be concerned with change and job loss but as explained in the Kindle example, adopt or stand pat and possibly go out of business.  Lastly, adoption of AI can create new job opportunities to replace those that are lost due to adoption.
